Based on decades of innovation, the 858 engine was built by Arctic Cat for Arctic Cat. Designed specifically for the CATALYST platform, the 858's proprietary design enhances power, agility and control. From working around the centerline steering to integrating components for weight reduction and increased performance, no compromises were made in pursuit of the ultimate ride.
The 858cc engine provides all the horsepower and airflow you need for superior performance. The air intake system maximizes airflow for more power output while multiple secondary, under-hood inlets prevent snow ingestion for optimized performance in all conditions. Our newly patented exhaust valve design also stays tight to the piston as it moves. This creates smoother exhaust port flow through a wider RPM range on both primary and auxiliary ports — and cleaner emissions.
Compared to Arctic Cat's 794cc engine, the 858 provides 11% more power and torque — and in a package that's 4% lighter. This gives you an optimal power-to-weight ratio for quicker acceleration and a more responsive, pulse-pounding ride. To keep a lightweight, compact size for the CATALYST platform, Arctic Cat used an 85mm bore while increasing to a 75.6 stroke to achieve more horsepower and deep, bottomless torque that pulls hard and smoothly through the entire RPM range. The result is a power-dense, easier to ride package that takes carving through deep snow, maneuvering tight trails and boondocking to the next level.
The centralized mass and low center of gravity work with the CATALYST platform to provide precision and control unlike anything you’ve experienced. The innovative laydown engine design achieves the best mass centralization of any snowmobile on the market while staying lightweight and compact. The result is a powerful, easy-to-ride sled.
The CATALYST platform was designed to be durable and easy to service, and the 858 engine is no exception. With fewer parts and an integrated mounting design in the crankcase, it’s stronger, sturdier and easier to maintain. Why did you choose this size and displacement for an engine purpose-built for CATALYST?
This specific bore/stroke ratio and engine displacement offers the greatest combination of power and weight in the CATALYST platform. We were able to increase displacement and horsepower while actually reducing engine weight. If we chose a larger displacement, the engine weight would not allow for the optimized vehicle handling, power-to-weight ratio and overall rider experience that CATALYST offers.
What have you done to reduce the engine and system weight?
By closely analyzing every component of every system, and “putting the engine on a diet” wherever possible, we were able to reduce the weight of the system greatly. We cut a significant amount of weight from the engine crankcase while maintaining high strength through rigorous finite element analysis, along with the engine’s exhaust valve system and other miscellaneous areas.
What is the benefit of keeping the bore the same as the current 800 while extending the stroke?
If we increased the bore, the engine would naturally get wider – something we wanted to avoid with the CATALYST platform. By maintaining a smaller bore diameter, our piston weight remained low, and in turn, our reciprocating and rotational engine mass was minimized. A smaller bore diameter also helps keep emissions low. Conversely, a large bore could drive piston temperatures up, reducing the durability of the engine, and cause more variation in combustion for a lower run quality.
Did you design this engine with any specific segment in mind over the others?
When designing the 858, we didn’t have one specific segment in mind. At the onset of this project, we set the goal of making a lightweight, durable and powerful engine that was purpose-built for the CATALYST platform. All segments will reap the benefits of such an engine.
What do you mean when you say the new 858 engine was purpose-built for CATALYST?
We had the rare opportunity to design and develop the 858 engine and CATALYST chassis concurrently. Generally, an existing engine is placed into a new chassis or vice versa – this wasn’t the case here. The laydown engine is designed to fit as low and far back in the chassis as possible to optimize the center of gravity of the vehicle and its handling, and the new integrated engine mounting and intake angle were incorporated to fit the platform design. In turn, the chassis is perfectly formed around the engine in ways that we haven’t been able to achieve before.
